Established to help the boundaries of literary writing and the globalization of Korean literature, the prizes are awarded to the work in each genre judged to be most outstanding in literary quality, without consideration of the author's seniority of affiliations in the literary world.

Categories :
Poetry (including Sijo) / Fiction / Drama / Criticism / Translation

Total Award :
The prize in each category is worth 30 million won, and the total prize money of 150 Million won makes this the largest set of literary prizes at present given in Korea.

The award-winning works will be translated into various languages, published by reputed publishers in the appropriate countries, and made widely known abroad.

Selection :
Award-winning works in each genre are selected among those works which have been published within the last two years. Final selecton is made by a second jury after an initial screening and short-listing. The prize is given to a single work in each category but if no work of sufficient merit is found, the prize for that category is not awarded.

The 11th (2003)

The 2003 recipients were the poet KIM Kwang-Kyu for his work The Time We First Met, novelist SONG Ki-Won for his recent book The Scent of a Human

Being, and KIM Edeltrud and KIM Sun-Hi for their German translation of OH Jung-Hee's Vogël, A Bird which was published by Pendragon. No winners were announced in the Drama or Criticism categories.

The award-winning works will be translated into various languages and released by reputed publishers. The award ceremony was held on November 28 at he Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.

Chiri, novelist HWANG Suk-Young for his recent book The Guest, playwright LEE Gun-Sam for his drama Magnificent Escape, critic CHOI Won-Shik for his critique The Return of Literature, and LEE In-Sook, KIM Kyung-Hee, Maryse Bourdin for their French translation of SU Jung-In's Talgung which was published by Seuil, a prestigious French publisher.

 The award-winning works will be translated into various languages and released by reputed publishers. The award ceremony was held on November 23 at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.
