Established to encourage the better understanding
and reception of world classics, thereby making Korean literary
soil more fertile and widening the field of cultural exchange between
Korean and the world. Active and systematic support will be given
to capable translators and scholars who can translate and introduce
world classics, whether time-honored of contemporary, into present-day
Korean. development of Korean stuenrich the soil of Korean Literature
and to broaden the interchange between Korean and World literature
by accepting find pieces offoreign literature.
Selection:
Grants are offered to 15-20 applicants. Successful
applicants will receive 4-6 million won, depending on the manageability
of the proposed translation project. Once the translation is complete,
it will be screened again by juries composed of experts in the related
area, and published in a series of the Daesan World Classics by
the publishing company, Moonhak-kwa Jisung-sa.
Schedule:
Application received: early May - mid-August
/ Screening: early August - early October / Results of screening announced: late October

5th (2003)
The
Foundation selected 13 recipients and awarded them between 5 to 6 million won each
for the translations, a total of 66 million won.
Awards
were given to one English works "Under the Volcano" by Edith Wharton,
three each in French, German and Chinese, and one each in Spanish, Japanese, Russian,
Italian, Turkish and Polish. Most of these works are to be translated for the first
time into Korean.
The
award ceremony was held at the Daesan Foundation on December 12.
Six
works were added to the "Daesan World Classics," series, including Karl
Philipp Moritz's Anton
Reiser.
"Daesan
World Classics" is published by Moonhak-kwa-Jisung-sa as part of an on-going
series based on translations that receive these grants.
